Adult Sailing
Adult Sailing Program 2011
This summer Dartmouth Yacht Club is offering an adult learn to sail program aboard a 36' boat with emphasis on seamanship and safety. Courses will be taught by a CYA certified instructor. Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded the Canadian Yachting Association's Basic Cruising Standard, the objective of which is to develop sufficient skills "to be able to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sloop rigged keelboat of 6 to 10 metres in moderate wind and sea conditions by day".
This course will be taught in 2 parts. Basic Cruising Part A will teach terminology, safety procedures, and vessel handling under both sail and power. Basic Cruising Part B will expand on the skills learned in Part A. Students will learn about anchoring, navigation, reducing sail and man overboard recovery. Each session will be taught in one evening lecture and one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of on the water, hands-on, practical lessons. Classroom sessions will run from 6:30 to 9:30 pm on weekdays and the practical sessions will be from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
